The Cylindrospermopsin ELISA Kit is designed for the detection and quantification of cylindrospermopsin, a cyanobacterial toxin produced by several strains of blue-green algae, in water samples.

Cylindrospermopsin has been detected in freshwater environments worldwide and is associated with several cyanobacterial genera, including Cylindrospermopsis, Umezakia and Aphanizomenon. Its production appears to be strain-specific rather than species-specific. The occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms is an increasing concern for drinking water supplies, particularly in areas affected by eutrophication and nutrient pollution.

Human and animal exposure to cylindrospermopsin may occur through the ingestion of contaminated drinking water or food, including fish, as well as through recreational activities involving contaminated water. Dermal exposure may also occur during swimming, bathing or other water-related activities. Cylindrospermopsin can affect liver function and inhibit protein synthesis and glutathione, potentially leading to cellular damage.

Monitoring cylindrospermopsin is therefore an important component of water quality and public health programmes.
