Cytauxzoon spp. is a tick-borne protozoan parasite within the family Theileriidae along with their closest relatives of Theileria spp. Some Cytauxzoon species infect wild and domestic felids causing a severe, and often fatal disease. Clinical signs are the result of severe intravascular hemolysis and include anemia, icterus, hepatomegaly, and splenomegaly. Mortality rates approach 100% within 2 weeks of infection although, some individuals appear to recover. PCR assay may be used to diagnose clinical and subclinical infections.

T. annulata causes tropical theileriosis and T. parva causes East Coast fever. T. equi is a known cause of equine piroplasmosis.
