Giardia intestinalis (also known as Giardia lamblia) is a flagellated protozoan parasite, belonging to the Hexamitidae family. It colonizes and reproduces in the small intestine, causing giardiasis. Infection usually occurs through ingestion of G. intestinalis cysts in water (including both unfiltered drinking water and recreational waters) or food contaminated by the feces of infected humans or animals. Many infections are asymptomatic, when occur are mainly intestinal, characterized by chronic diarrhea abdominal cramps, bloating, fatigue, and weight loss. G. intestinalis infects humans, but it is also one of the most common parasites infecting cats, dogs and birds. Mammalian hosts also include cattle, beavers, deer, and sheep.
